Kids love playing with sand, and they really love kinetic sand! Instead of running to the store, why not make your own? Just think how impressed your kids will be! It's a fun hands-on activity you can make together, and I certainly don't mind that it's budget friendly too. I have to confess, I enjoy playing with it just as much as the kids.
Making moon dough at home is easy! I came across a recipe years ago and adapted it so it comes out just the way my kids like it. It isn't exactly like the store-bought kind, but they may even like it better. Best of all, the ingredients are 100% edible - just in case you're worried about curious little ones. Don't worry, it's not very tasty!
Kids can squish it, mold it, build moon craters, create animals, make pretend treats, or simply let it crumble through their fingers. It's a great sensory activity for rainy days, hot afternoons, or anytime they need a little creative fun.

What You Need
- 4-5 c. flour
- 1 c. cooking oil
- 1-2 tsp food coloring
How To:
- Whisk oil and food coloring together in a bowl.
- Add two cups of flour and mix well. You can also use a mixer.
- Add the remaining flour ½ cup at a time, mixing well after each addition, until you reach your desired texture. I like it when it sticks together in a ball but still crumbles when squished.
- Store in an airtight plastic container.
Macaroni Tips:
- We like to play with moon dough outside for easy cleanup, or spread a sheet on the floor when playing indoors.
- The more the dough is played with, the better the texture becomes.
- Add toy astronauts, construction vehicles, cookie cutters, or small cups and spoons for even more creative fun.
