📜 The Wonderful Tradition of Tracking Santa
The NORAD Tracks Santa tradition began in 1955 when a misprinted phone number in a Sears Roebuck and Co. advertisement connected kids to the CONAD Commander’s operations hotline instead of Santa. Colonel Harry Shoup and his team embraced the mix-up, checking the radar for Santa and sharing updates with the children who called.
In 1958, the governments of Canada and the United States created a bi-national air defense command called the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which then took on the beloved tradition of tracking Santa. Today, millions of families visit the NORAD Tracks Santa website and app each year, and media outlets worldwide rely on NORAD for accurate updates on Santa’s journey.
