On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that all enslaved people were finally free. Since then, Juneteenth has been commemorated in African American communities across the country, and it became a U.S. federal holiday in 2021.
